What is data?
Facts and statistics collected together for reference or analysis.
What are Independent and Dependent Variables?
In an experiment, the independent variable is the variable that is varied or manipulated by the researcher, and the dependent variable is the response that is measured.
When constructing a table of data, the independent variable is recorded in the left column and the dependent variable is recorded in the right column.
Although data are sometimes ordered from largest to smallest, the usual procedure is to order data from smallest to largest |
Examples:
Data: (5,10) (2,8) (4,6) Independent Variable: Dependent Variable: 5 10 2 8 4 6 |
Examples; Find the Independent and Dependent Variables
The amount of rainfall this month increased and the plants grew rapidly.
I studied for hours for my test and received an A+ on it. |
Independent Variable: Rainfall
Dependent Variable: The Plants Independent Variable: Studying Dependent Variable: Test Grade |
In an experiment repeated trials increase accuracy in results by reducing the effects of chance errors that may occur in a single trial.
Elements of Data
Mean: The Average
Median: Placed in an ascending order, add the two middle numbers then divide the sum by two.
Mode: Most often number repeated.
Range: The difference between the largest and smallest values in a data set.

Transferring Data from Table to Graph
Observe the data in the table and write number pairs
Use the number pairs to locate data points on a graph
IV is graphed horizontal on the X-axis and the DV is graphed vertical on the Y-axis
